Vices of a Hollow Nation

By: Muhammad Ahmad Abdullah Butt

When people from different origins, cultures, caste and creed are united by a common belief or ideology, a high-spirited and resilient nation is born. Eliminate that belief or ideology, the resilient nation becomes an unprincipled crowd. Pakistan came into existence as a result of the unprecedented efforts of our ancestors and radiant leadership, which made us a nation. The stories of heroism, sweat and blood, bravery and wisdom of our forefathers, are now confined to text book syllabi without having any impact on our social and moral way of living. The once high-spirited nation, has started to descend into the abyss of its own vices, converting into a devious crowd.
Terrorism, political instability, sectarianism, feudalism, power outages and sub-standard way of living in Pakistan, are all the results of either incompetent leadership or external forces. With this being true to a major extent, have we ever considered that there might be some other dynamics which are adversely affecting our society? Factors, for instance dishonesty, trickery, treachery, untruthfulness, forgery, bribery, greediness and all the unethical elements of these sorts, are the vices, which turns a sane nation into a hollow crowd. No nation can be labeled as perfect in this regard, but we are an Islamic State built on the divine fundamentals of ‘La Illaha Illallah’. Somewhere along the path, we have lost its translation and indulged ourselves in actions that have resulted in our moral decline.
When souls are lost in an unfortunate oil tanker blaze because people were busy in collecting the spilled oil instead of maintaining a safe distance and ignoring the outcome. From something as petty as picking up Coca Cola bottles after the truck got into an accident, to breaking a traffic signal or begging Amir bhai and Fahad bhai for “stuff” in their game shows. From college students smoking weed to interceding, bribery and Jaib garam karna at all levels of our human lives. All these incidents point out the fact that this nation is in need of some severe ethical preaching. We can blame the government and politicians as much as we want, but we must never forget that no matter what the circumstances are, or how many hardships we face, we live in Islamic Republic of Pakistan-a country founded on the ideals of Islam- and Islam does not teach this. If we disregard our religious teachings by running after these materialistic sentiments and worldly gains, we may never be able to come out of this immoral chasm. Enlighten your soul, work hard if you want to achieve something and do not look for shortcuts. Have some FAITH, you will get it eventually.
