How to Develop a Website Content Strategy

In today’s world, digital publications like websites and eBooks are taking over traditional publications like newspaper and paper magazines.  However, digital publishing allows anyone who may be from any field of life to put stuff online. This has resulted in a clutter of information on the internet. In this scenario, anyone who’s planning to pursue the stream of online publication needs to be very vigilant and aware of what niche or topic will get him/her the largest traffic and better website rating. Therefore, before starting any publication, one should be aware of his/her website’s content strategy.

What is Content Strategy?
According to Wikipedia definition, Content strategy refers to the planning, development, and management of content—written or in other media. So basically, it revolves around deciding what type of content you want to put up on your website or blog.

That being said, there are a number of content website strategies that one should know before starting a new website or blog.

·       Decide your content type
This is probably the first thing that a person thinks of when he/she decides going into online publishing and it’s probably the easiest thing because it’s almost kind of decided what type of content will the publisher be producing. Different content types can be videos, images, written articles. The content type also directly depends upon the medium you’ll be using. For instance, if you’ll be making videos, YouTube is the best option whereas, for images, Instagram seems better and if you are thinking of going for written text, you should go with a blogger or WordPress site.

·         Research on current trends
A very important factor is to research the trends that are famous at the time you start your website. There will be a number of trendy topics available from a number of Niches. You can choose the one that interests you.

·         Brainstorm to decide exactly what you want to work on
After you’ve looked through various trends, try brainstorming about your selected niche to narrow down or broaden up the topic you’re decided. This will give you a better idea of what you’re going to do.

·         Know your intended audience
Knowing who will read and access your content is also very important. Not only that you should know of what age group of people you would be targeting but you should be aware of what ethnicity are you targeting if you have chosen a topic that people of a given region or ethnicity can relate to. For example, if you’re going to write about restaurants in Brazil, it makes sense that most of the people accessing the blogs would be Brazilian.

·         Produce unique and quality content
If people can read the same content you are providing somewhere else, why would they come to you? So, make your content unique and interesting enough that people come to visit your website again and again. This point can be emphasized by the fact that big and famous websites get famous mainly because their ideas are unique and produce original content.
