Doaa Al Zamel --- The Story of Courage

“If we don’t end the war, war will end us.” ~ (H.G Wells)

What is WAR? It is a state of armed conflict between two countries or groups. One such country is Syria, where people have been in a miserable state of war for years. It began with anti-government protests before accelerating in a full scale civil war, making it almost impossible for people to survive in their own country. It is an almost seventh year of bloodshed in Syria, where hundreds of thousands of children are losing their loved ones. Their houses are demolished and families are bombarded. Armed forces are killing dozens of innocent people. Their loved ones are either killed or being jailed for no reasons. For people, it became the need of the hour to abandon their homeland. Many of the Syrians tried to escape through the Mediterranean Sea and others are still struggling to get back peace on their land.

On a daily basis, we come across the heart wrenching stories of Syrian which brings tears to our eyes. Syrian people have harrowing stories of death and destruction. Doaa Al Zamel, 19 year old girl, is one the Syrian Refugees who suffered a lot due to this war.  Her story begins alike other Syrian Refugees, struggling for the survival. She was lucky enough to escape from Syria and managed to reach Egypt and started her new life there. Her old life was vanished, but still she didn’t give up and worked very hard to survive.  She did multiple jobs to continue her studies. She felt safe in the streets of Egypt but her peace didn’t last longer. One day, a gang of notorious people tried to kidnap her but she escaped. This incident shattered her confidence and it was impossible for her to survive. Streets of Egypt haunted her every single moment.

In 2014, she got engaged with another Syrian refugee, Bassem who later helped her out. They decided to cross the dangerous Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe, where they can start their new lives. This could only be done by the help of the smuggler. So they had no choice left other than to trust the smuggler, who promised to take them to Europe. So, Bassem gave his life saving money to him. Smuggler crammed 500 people in a small boat. Despite of the fact, Doaa was afraid of water, she got into the boat. Soon, they started their journey towards Europe. After the three days of struggle with the waves, they felt, they would never reach the shore. A big blue fishing boat approached near to them. Then all of the sudden, they began hurling planks of wood at the refugees while shouting “Let the fish eat your flesh!” and sped away. Planks of wood made holes in their rusty boat, which was carrying 500 people. Soon, their boat sunk in the water. People got trapped into the boat’s propellers. She began to cry for help and soon spotted Bassem swimming towards her, holding a floating ring for her.

Somehow she managed to get into it. She could hear people crying for help and dying. In the deep dark sea, she was helplessly sitting in a ring when an old man approached her and handed over her nine months granddaughter Malek and gave up his life by allowing himself to drown. Soon after, Bassem couldn’t make it and left Doaa, apologizing that he couldn’t fulfil his promise and drowned, leaving Doaa in tears. Moment after this tragic incident a mother struggling with her 18 months old daughter Masa, came and asked Doaa, to save her daughter’s life. Masa’s mother couldn’t survive and gave up her life to deadly sea.

Doaa kept soothing the crying kids by reciting verses from the Quran, playing with them and telling them stories. With no food, no shelter and dark sea all around, holding two small girls and supporting them with water ring, it was hope that kept her alive.

On the night of the fourth day, she saw a ship and shouted to her highest level and soon got the attention of the ship and they saved her and the two little angels. Doaa not only survived, but also heroically saved two lives. Sadly, little Malek couldn’t survive and died in the rescuing ship. In-spite of the fact she was afraid of the water, she still managed to escape death with her HOPE. Yes, if you hope for the best you will somehow get better reward in return. One must hope for the best and help others to achieve inner peace and good reward in return.
